POZNAŃ

Poznań - one of the oldest and largest Polish cities, located on the river Warta, between Berlin and Warsaw. It's the fifth largest city in Poland in terms of population (about 540 000 inhabitants without students) and there is the eighth in terms of area (262 km²). The city is a road and rail junction, there is also an international Poznań-Ławica airport. Poznań is a center of industry, trade, logistics and tourism. The Poznań "International Fair" functions here - the largest and oldest exhibition center in Poland. Poznań is an academic, scientific and cultural center. In 26 higher education schools, there are nearly 120,000 students. There are here opera, philharmonic hall, ballet, theaters, cinemas, museums, art galleries, orchestras and folklore groups.

Which places you should visit?


 1- Stary Rynek (Old Market Squere) 
It's the main city square in Poznan (square with a side length of 141 meters). Stary Rynek is the third largest market in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. You can see there: town hall, city scales,
colorful buildings, guardroom, palace Działyńskich, palace Mielżyńskich, pillory,
Statue of Saint. Jan Nepomucen, well "Bamberki",  "Prozerpiny"fountain, Apollo fountain and Mars fountain. What is more you can visit also "Museum of  Marcin's croissants". Poznan is knowing with special recipe of croissants.


Town hall (Ratusz) is a renaissance building standing at the Old Market Square in Poznań, once a town hall function. A bugle call from Poznań is played daily from the town hall tower. Every day at 12:00 !!!!! you can see fighting goats. Goats are one of the symbols of Poznań
City scales (waga miejska) - Initially, the weight was the seat of the weighman and his potassium, who, for a small fee, measured the mass of the goods. In the post-war years, there was a Registry Office in Poznań and weddings are still here. In 2009, the public relations agency People Meet People became the operator and tenant of the municipal importance, which transformed the building into a cultural center (exhibitions, concerts, performances, discussions, conferences, restaurant).
Guardroom (odwach)- In the interwar period it was a garrison prison. Currently, it houses the Museum of the Wielkopolska Uprising of 1918-1919, which is a branch of the Wielkopolska Museum of Independence Battles.

Pillory (pręgierz) - It is an octagonal, late-gothic column, on the head of which is a figure of a hangman in a knight's costume with a raised sword, which symbolizes the so-called "sword's law". That is the right to pass the death sentence given to Poznań in 1298 by Władysław Łokietek. There were iron hoops in the pole to which convicts were tied
 



Statue of Saint. Jan Nepomucen (figura św. Jana Nepomucena) - Patron was a person protecting cities against floods, and such phenomena in the past often plagued Poznan, due to the sharp turn of the Warta River.
Well Bamberki (studzienka Bamberki) - the figurine depicts a woman in a characteristic Bambers costume, with carriers and convoys used in winemaking. The basin of the manhole, to which water ran down two streams, was intended for a horse trough, but the population of the city also benefited from it.
"Prozerpiny"fountain (fontanna Prozerpiny) - one of four fountains on the Old Market Square in Poznań, located in front of the Town Hall.

Mars's fountain (Fontanna Marsa) - one of the four fountains on the Old Market Square in Poznań, stands on the north-western side of the Poznań Market Square.

It's museum of St. Martin's Croissant, located on old market squere. The museum is devoted to the tradition of baking a croissant, which is already 150 years old. Visiting the museum is interactive. Visitors during the show will learn how to produce a croissant according to the original recipe.
The museum aims to promote Poznań's culture and history, the most characteristic of which are: St. Martin's croissants, Poznań dialect and goats on the Town Hall tower.
 Monument of goats in Poznan (Pomnik koziołków w Poznaniu)- It's a monument to two squatting goats, located in Poznań on Plac Kolegiacki, near the main entrance to the Municipal Office. The monument, due to its easy accessibility from ground level and the ability to sit on the backs of animals, is a popular place for taking souvenir photos by tourists and residents of the city. It refers to one of the symbols of Poznań - goats from the town hall tower.

 2 -Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Maria Magdalene   
(Bazylika Matki Boskiej Nieustającej Pomocy i św. Marii Magdaleny)
It's the most magnificent temple in Poznan and one of the most beautiful in Poland. It's a baroque parish church and collegiate church dedicated to Saint. Stanisław Biskupa Martyr in Poznań. There is next to old market squere.
3. National Museum in Poznań (Muzeum Narodowe w Poznaniu)- art museum in Poznań, national cultural institution, founded in 1919 as the Wielkopolska Museum in Poznań. The museum is entered into the State Register of Museums, maintained by the minister competent for culture and protection of national heritage. The museum has several branches in: Poznań, Rogalinm, Głuchów and Śmiełów.



4. The Royal Castle in Poznan (Zamek Królewski w Poznaniu) -
The Royal Castle in Poznań is the oldest preserved royal residence in Poland. The building was erected on Wzgórze Przemysła in the 13th century, first as a residential tower for Przemysł I, and later extended by his son Przemysl II - the first Polish king after the district breakdown. The Royal Castle standing just behind the Old Market in Poznan has witnessed many important historical events for Poland. It was here in 1493 that the king of Poland paid tribute to the great Teutonic master Hans von Tieffen. Here fought during the Swedish Deluge and other skirmishes, so the castle was destroyed many time. You can use the observation deck.

5.Imperial Castle in Poznan (Zamek Cesarski w Poznaniu) - The most important building of the Imperial Quarter. It's now the center of culture. The "Zamek" Cultural Center in Poznań is one of the largest institutions of this kind in the country. Every year, about 700 events take place here: exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, theater performances, meetings, educational workshops. The "Zamek" Culture Center is housed in the last, built with such a flourish for the ruling ruler, the imperial residence in Europe.

6. Cytadela Park - Poznań's largest park with an area of approximately 100 ha. It was created in 1963-1970. In the nineteenth century there was a citadel here. In its remains there is an exhibition with an exhibition of historical weaponry In the park there are museums, memorials, cemeteries, alleys and lots of greenery. It is not only a park, but also a place of remembrance and history.







7. Ostrów Tumski - it is currently the only of the numerous islands on the Warta in the area of the city. This place is an oasis of peace and quiet in the center of the bustling city of Poznan - this is where the first bishopric was erected in Poland, here the first rulers rest. The most important monument on Ostrów is the St. Apostles Peter and Paul - archcathedral basilica with Gothic shapes (early X century). In addition, the Archbishop's Palace, the Lubrański Academy and the Archdiocesan Museum are worth seeing on the island.

8. Malta Lake (jezioro Maltańskie) -its a lake where many important canoeing and rowing racesare held, was established in 1952 by damming up the Cybina River and has an area of 64.0 ha.
The average depth is just over 3.13 m, and the maximum is about 5 meters.
The regatta course (one of the best regatta tracks in Europe) is 2190 m long and 170-400 m wide. In the western part of the lake is the largest fountain in Poznań, funded to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the foundation of the city. Along the northern shore of the lake runs a narrow-gauge railway line Maltanka, whose final station - Zwierzyniec - is located near the entrance to the Wielkopolski Zoological Park (New Zoo). On the southern bank - on the Freedom mound, there is an artificial, all-year-round ski slope and a summer toboggan run. At the foot of the mound, there is a golf course and a mini golf course. There is also a swimming pool nearby. In this beautiful scenery summer performances of the Malta International Theater Festival take place. In winter, an ice rink is open on the west side of the lake.Next to Malta lake there is big aquapark "Termy Maltańskie" .

10. New ZOO - the second zoological garden in Poland in terms of area. It covers an area of 120.68 ha situated on a hilly forest area with six extensive ponds with a total area of over 13 ha. The extensive area of the New Zoo can be visited on foot or travel to the tourists by trains park and garden queue.

11. Palmiarnia [http://www.palmiarnia.poznan.pl/en/] - is the largest exhibition of exotic plants and fish in the country and one of the largest in Europe. In pavilions with an area of 4900 sq m over 1,100 species of plants and 170 species of fish were collected. The visitor travels through the zones of the Mediterranean, subtropical climate, tropics and savannas and so on. (adults-10zł, students-7zł, children until 3yo-free)

15. INEA Stadion- football stadium in Poznan. Currently, it is used by the Lech Poznań football club, and earlier by the Warta Poznań. In 2012, it was the arena of Euro 2012, there were 3 group stage matches played on it. In the beginning there was place for 41,609 people but in 2012 it was increased to 43,269.

16.  International Fair Poznań (Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie)- the largest organizer of trade fairs in Central and Eastern Europe. It belongs to organizations gathering trade fair leaders from around the world. It has 16 high-standard pavilions and a large area (over 110,000 sq m in exhibition halls and almost 35,000 sq m open space) and 81 modern conference halls. The fairs are held almost every week. The most popular are MotorShow but you can fine here almost all areas of interest: clothes, food, horses, weddings, bulidings,toys for children,  garden and so on.

 

17. Railway Station - quite a modern version of the train station. The train station is connected to the shopping center.

 

18. Stary Browar- It is a combination of a shopping center and an art gallery. In Stary Browar there are around 210 shopping and gastronomic points. The building was designed on the basis of a post-industrial monument - the former Hugger Brewery.  Stary Browar has received many awards. (among others) . It was considered one of the 20 icons of architecture that were created after 1989.
In Amsterdam 2008, Stary Browar 50 50 was chosen by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) as the best shopping center in Europe in the Extensions / Refurbishments category. The National Geographic Traveler in 2012 awarded Stary Browar as the winner of the 7 New Wonders of Poland plebiscite.
